Nigeria’s senior national football team, the Super Eagles, will on Tuesday discover their opponents for the qualification series of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations as the Confederation of African Football prepares to conduct the official draw in Cairo, Egypt.

The ceremony is expected to mark the beginning of another important qualification journey for the three time African champions as they seek a place at Africa’s biggest football tournament scheduled to be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda in 2027.

The competition, officially branded as AFCON PAMOJA 2027, will become the first Africa Cup of Nations to be organised by three East African nations. The word “Pamoja,” which means “together” in Swahili, was adopted by CAF to symbolise unity, regional cooperation and the collective spirit of African football.

The tournament itself is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, and will also represent the return of the Africa Cup of Nations to East Africa for the first time in more than five decades since Ethiopia hosted the tournament in 1976.

CAF confirmed that 48 countries will participate in the qualification process, including the three host nations that have already secured automatic qualification for the finals.

According to the qualification structure released by the African football governing body, the participating teams will be divided into 12 groups containing four countries each. The top two teams from every group will secure qualification for the tournament.

However, groups containing any of the host nations will produce only one additional qualifying team because Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda have already booked places automatically as co hosts.

For Nigeria, the draw represents another crucial stage in the country’s efforts to maintain its status among Africa’s football elite while continuing preparations for future continental and global competitions.

The Super Eagles remain one of the most successful teams in African football history, having won the Africa Cup of Nations title three times in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

Nigeria has also produced several legendary footballers who made major impacts both on the continent and internationally, helping establish the Super Eagles as one of Africa’s most respected national teams.

The upcoming qualification campaign is expected to attract enormous attention from Nigerian football supporters who are eager to see which opponents the team will face in the race for qualification.

The Super Eagles have continued rebuilding under new leadership following recent international competitions. Football analysts believe the qualification series will provide another opportunity for the technical crew to strengthen team chemistry while integrating both experienced stars and younger talents into the national team setup.

Nigeria currently boasts one of the strongest squads in African football, with several players competing regularly in Europe’s major leagues.

Among the key players expected to play important roles during the qualifiers are Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman, Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface, AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze and Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

Many of these players have become important figures for their clubs and are expected to remain central to Nigeria’s ambitions in the qualification campaign.

CAF has announced that the qualifiers will be played during three FIFA international windows between September 2026 and March 2027.

The opening rounds of matches are expected to take place between September 21 and October 6, 2026, while the second phase of fixtures is scheduled for November 9 to November 17, 2026.

The final qualification matches will then be played between March 22 and March 30, 2027, after which all qualified teams for the tournament will be confirmed.

Several African football giants including Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and South Africa are also expected to compete in the qualifiers, increasing the excitement surrounding the draw ceremony.

CAF officials have repeatedly stated that African football has become far more competitive in recent years, with smaller nations increasingly challenging traditional powerhouses.

Countries such as Comoros, The Gambia and Equatorial Guinea have delivered surprising performances in recent tournaments, proving that qualification campaigns can no longer be taken lightly by bigger football nations.

Beyond football, AFCON PAMOJA 2027 is expected to deliver significant economic and developmental benefits across East Africa. The tournament is projected to boost tourism, improve sporting infrastructure and strengthen regional cooperation among the host countries.

CAF also believes the competition will provide an opportunity to showcase East Africa’s culture, hospitality and passion for football to the global audience.

As anticipation grows ahead of Tuesday’s draw in Cairo, millions of Nigerian football fans will be closely monitoring the event to see the path the Super Eagles must navigate in their pursuit of another Africa Cup of Nations appearance and a possible fourth continental title.
