ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for stronger dialogue, mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence among Muslims, Christians and followers of other faiths, saying religious harmony is essential to Nigeria’s stability, development and prosperity.
The President’s position was conveyed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Monday during the inauguration of the Muslim World League Mosque in Abuja.
Tinubu stressed the importance of building bridges across religious and social divides, urging Nigerians to embrace dialogue and mutual respect as a means of strengthening national unity. He said peaceful coexistence among people of different faiths would create an environment conducive to economic growth, social development and national stability.
The President noted that Nigeria’s religious diversity should be viewed as a strength rather than a source of division. According to him, Muslims, Christians and adherents of other faiths have important roles to play in promoting peace and contributing to the country’s progress.
Idris, who represented the President at the event, highlighted the administration’s commitment to encouraging understanding among religious communities and supporting initiatives capable of promoting peaceful relations across the country.
The inauguration of the Muslim World League Mosque provided an opportunity for government officials, religious leaders and other stakeholders to emphasise the importance of religious tolerance in addressing challenges confronting the nation.
Tinubu said sustained engagement between religious communities would help reduce suspicion, strengthen social cohesion and promote a shared sense of national purpose. He urged Nigerians to reject religious intolerance and focus on common values that unite citizens regardless of their faith.
The President maintained that Nigeria’s prosperity could not be achieved without peace and stability, stressing that communities must work together to create an atmosphere where citizens can pursue economic opportunities, raise their families and contribute meaningfully to national development.
He also called on religious leaders to use their influence to promote peace, tolerance and responsible citizenship, particularly at a time when divisions and insecurity remain major concerns.
The Federal Government, he said, would continue to support efforts aimed at strengthening interfaith understanding and creating platforms for constructive dialogue among different religious groups.
Tinubu’s message comes amid ongoing efforts to promote national cohesion and peaceful relations among Nigeria’s diverse religious and ethnic communities. The President reiterated that unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence remain critical to building a stable and prosperous Nigeria.
