Unizik student clashes with lecturer over TikTok video
DDM News

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), witnessed a heated altercation on Tuesday involving a student and a lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Michael.
The incident, which has gained widespread attention online, reportedly occurred after the student’s TikTok recording was interrupted.
Eyewitnesses narrated the incident to Diaspora digital media (DDM), that the student was filming near a campus building entrance when Dr. Michael attempted to walk past.
As he moved through, he reportedly tapped her shoulder, leading the student to express her displeasure.
“Imagine! Why would he touch me like that?” she was heard saying in reaction to the encounter.
Dr. Michael, noticing her reaction, turned back to address the student and realized she was recording.
Not wanting to be caught on camera, he reportedly reached for her phone, escalating the situation.
Footage circulating online shows the student reacting aggressively, resulting in a physical struggle between both parties.
Student shares her perspective
Amid public debate, the student released a statement titled My Own Side of the Story, explaining her actions.
She claimed she was filming with a friend when she suddenly felt a nudge and heard someone say, “Excuse me.”
At first, she assumed it was another student, only to turn and realize it was a lecturer.
Feeling uncomfortable with the encounter, she whispered her frustration to a friend before noticing an attempt to take her phone.
“I held on tightly and turned around to see the same man who had passed me earlier,” she explained.
She alleged that her phone fell and broke during the struggle, leaving her upset.
The student further described the situation as distressing, adding that she acted in self-defense when tensions escalated.
She admitted to tearing the lecturer’s shirt but maintained that it was not intentional.
Lecturer’s response
Dr. Michael refuted the student’s account, stating that her reaction was excessive and unprovoked.
He explained that he only turned back to confirm if she was his student and to ask for any footage to be deleted.
“I reached for her phone, only for her to react aggressively and engage in a struggle with me,” he stated.
He added that other students later got involved, leading to an even bigger confrontation.
Campus security had to intervene as tensions escalated among students and onlookers.
University responds
UNIZIK’s Chief Security Officer, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed that the institution is conducting an internal investigation.
He assured that the university will release an official statement once the inquiry is completed.
