75 Killed in Edo Road Accidents in Six Months, FRSC Confirms

Seventy-five people have been confirmed dead in a series of road crashes that occurred across Edo State between January and June 2025.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the fatalities were recorded in 101 separate accidents, according to a statement by the Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, during a press briefing in Benin City on Monday.

Mathew disclosed that 903 passengers were involved in the crashes within the six-month period.

Of this number, 304 sustained varying degrees of injuries, while 75 others tragically lost their lives.

He provided a month-by-month breakdown, revealing that 15 deaths occurred in January, 18 in February, 14 in March, four in April, five in May, and 19 in June.

The Sector Commander identified several causes of the road mishaps, including brake failure, over-speeding, reckless and dangerous driving, the use of mobile phones while driving, and illegal route violations by commercial drivers.

He warned that unless drivers adopted a culture of safety and discipline on the road, the situation would likely worsen.

Mathew also announced that the command had intensified public enlightenment campaigns across major cities and rural communities in Edo State.

These campaigns, he said, are focused on changing driver attitudes, enforcing compliance with traffic laws, and ultimately reducing the rate of accidents.

He further advised motorists to avoid drunk driving, overloading, night travel, and using phones while driving.

“These avoidable behaviours have consistently been responsible for the high number of road fatalities we are seeing,” Mathew said.

The FRSC boss called on stakeholders, including transport unions, community leaders, and state authorities, to join hands with the agency to achieve the goal of zero traffic deaths in Edo.

He emphasized that collective action is the only way to improve road safety and protect the lives of both motorists and pedestrians in the state.
