INEC debunks reports of released timetable for 2027 general election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly denied claims circulating in some quarters that it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, describing the reports as false and misleading.

DDM gathered that the electoral body said no timetable or schedule of activities has been issued for the 2027 polls, contrary to online publications and social media posts suggesting otherwise.

In a statement issued on Thursday, INEC clarified that it has not taken any step to publish election timelines for 2027 and warned that any document or information purporting to originate from the Commission outside the provisions of the law should be disregarded.

The Commission stressed that it operates strictly within the framework of the law guiding Nigeria’s electoral process, particularly the Electoral Act, 2022, which clearly outlines when election-related notices and timetables can be made public.
INEC drew attention to Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which stipulates that the Commission shall publish a Notice of Election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election.
According to the Commission, this statutory provision makes it impossible for INEC to lawfully release a timetable for the 2027 General Election at this time, noting that any timetable issued outside this legal window cannot emanate from the electoral umpire.
The Commission further assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election will be released at the appropriate time and in full compliance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022.
INEC explained that when the timetable is eventually released, it will be communicated through its established and verified channels to ensure transparency, accuracy, and public trust in the electoral process.
The electoral body also cautioned members of the public, political actors, and the media against spreading or relying on unverified information, especially on sensitive issues capable of causing confusion or unnecessary political tension.
INEC urged Nigerians to always depend on information published on its official platforms, including its website and verified social media handles, for accurate and authoritative updates on electoral matters.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to conducting credible, transparent, and legally compliant elections, assuring citizens that all activities leading to the 2027 General Election will be carried out strictly in line with the law.
The statement was electronically signed by Mr. Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman.
The clarification was dated January 2, 2026.
Observers say the Commission’s response underscores growing concerns over misinformation ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle and highlights the need for heightened media responsibility and public vigilance as political activities gradually intensify across the country.
