Mixed Reactions Trail Death of Former President Buhari Among Nigerian Celebrities

Prominent Nigerian celebrities have taken to social media to express their reactions following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital after battling a prolonged illness.

The Federal Government has since declared seven days of national mourning to honour the late president’s memory and leadership.

This declaration has stirred a range of emotional responses and controversial remarks from public figures across the entertainment and political spheres.

Veteran Nigerian rapper and social critic, Eedris Abdulkareem, noted that a person’s deeds in life shape their posthumous legacy.

He stated, “Your legacies after life are consequences of your deeds. Innalilahi wa innalilahi rajuhun.”

His comment echoed sentiments shared by others who recalled personal experiences during Buhari’s tenure.

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, expressed no remorse over the president’s death, recalling a near-death encounter allegedly ordered by Buhari.

In a video uploaded on his official Facebook page, Igboho said, “The man that sent DSS to come and kill me in the middle of the night on July 4th, 2021, has died today.”

The activist was referencing a 2021 midnight raid on his residence by the Department of State Services (DSS), which he claimed was orchestrated by the Buhari-led administration.

Meanwhile, reality TV star Anita Natacha Akide, popularly known as Tacha, took a more measured approach.

She acknowledged Buhari’s indelible place in Nigeria’s political narrative, regardless of public opinion.

“No matter your views, Muhammadu Buhari was a major part of Nigeria’s story. RIP,” she posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Veteran actress Kate Henshaw struck a philosophical tone in her reaction, stating, “Nothing dey this life.”

Her remark reflects the futility of material pursuits in the face of death, a view echoed by many during national periods of mourning.

Pere Egbi, actor and former Big Brother Naija housemate, reflected on the deep scars left on the Nigerian people during Buhari’s rule.

In his words, “May his soul rest in peace until resurrection morning. President Tinubu, as you reflect on your predecessor’s legacy, I appeal to your conscience: Nigeria is hurting. Millions are broken. Many have lost faith in political leaders because the pain left behind has fermented into bitterness and hate.”

Pere’s message extended beyond mourning to a direct appeal to Buhari’s successor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging reform and empathy.

Controversial street musician Portable took a more blunt route in his reaction.

He declared in a video on Instagram, “Make sure you do good. It’s Buhari that offends us, not Tinubu. Buhari died in London. May God rest his soul.”

His statement seemed to draw a distinction between Buhari’s actions and those of the current administration, exonerating Tinubu for now.

On a more reverent note, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, offered his respect to the deceased.

The Fuji legend shared a video tribute on Instagram in which he praised Buhari’s legacy and prayed for his peaceful rest, stating, “Sleep well.”

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, after previously ruling as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, remains a divisive figure.

While some Nigerians credit him with infrastructural projects and anti-corruption efforts, others criticise his administration for widespread insecurity, economic decline, and human rights abuses.

Reactions from celebrities appear to mirror the national mood, one filled with mixed feelings, painful memories, and hopeful reflection.

The national mourning continues, but the debate over Buhari’s legacy is far from over.

From entertainers to activists, the message is clear, Buhari’s death has rekindled conversations about justice, leadership, and the meaning of true national service.
