Court Orders Detention of Anambra Native Doctor Over Security Law Violation

An Anambra State High Court sitting in Awka has remanded a Nnewi-based native doctor, Ikechukwu Ezenagu, popularly known as Muomiri Afuluanya, at the Amawbia Correctional Centre pending further proceedings in his trial.

Justice Jude Obiora gave the order after hearing submissions from both the defence and prosecution on June 3.

Ezenagu, who was brought to court from a hospital, applied for bail through his counsel, Kingsley Awuka, citing health concerns and requesting permission to remain in the hospital until the next hearing.

The prosecution, led by Tobechukwu Nweke, opposed the application and urged the court to remand the defendant pending the determination of the bail request.

In his ruling, Justice Obiora held that a hospital was not a lawful detention facility for an accused person and ordered that Ezenagu be transferred to a correctional centre.

“A hospital is not a constitutional facility for the detention of a defendant,” the judge ruled.

The case was adjourned to June 19, 2026, for continuation of proceedings.

Ezenagu was first brought before the court on April 23, but his arraignment could not proceed due to his reported ill-health. During that appearance, he was assisted into the courtroom by security operatives, prompting concerns about his fitness to stand trial.

The court subsequently directed that he receive medical treatment before further proceedings.

The native doctor was arrested on March 26, 2026, by operatives of the Anambra State security outfit, Agunechemba, over allegations of violating the state’s Homeland Security Law. Security operatives later conducted a search of his residence in Nnewi as part of ongoing investigations.

The court is expected to consider his bail application and continue hearing the matter when proceedings resume on June 19.
