ABUJA, Nigeria — Former presidential candidate and 2027 Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential flag bearer, Peter Obi, has condemned the abduction of worshippers in Enugu State, describing the incident as further evidence of the worsening security situation across the country.
In a statement shared on his official social media platforms, Obi expressed deep concern over the attack, saying it was disturbing that citizens who had gathered peacefully for worship were subjected to such a traumatic experience. He described the incident as a painful reminder of the growing insecurity confronting Nigerians.
According to Obi, the latest abduction demonstrates that insecurity is no longer confined to a few states but has evolved into a nationwide crisis affecting people regardless of their ethnic, religious or regional backgrounds. He warned that criminal attacks have become increasingly widespread, leaving many Nigerians uncertain about their safety in places of worship, schools, workplaces and even their homes.
The former Anambra State governor stated that every Nigerian should be able to practise their faith without fear of violence or abduction. He argued that attacks on religious gatherings undermine public confidence and highlight the urgent need for stronger and more effective security measures across the country.
Obi called on all relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the immediate and safe release of the abducted worshippers. He also urged law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible for the attack are identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He stressed that protecting the lives and property of citizens remains the primary responsibility of every government, adding that insecurity continues to pose a serious threat to national development and public confidence. According to him, no nation can achieve sustainable economic growth or social progress while its citizens live in constant fear.
The NDC presidential candidate also appealed to Nigerians to set aside political, ethnic and religious differences in confronting the country’s security challenges. He emphasised that insecurity affects every part of the country and requires collective action involving government institutions, security agencies, community leaders and ordinary citizens.
Obi further stated that the value of every Nigerian life must remain paramount, insisting that incidents such as kidnappings and attacks on innocent citizens should never become accepted as normal occurrences. He urged authorities to adopt proactive measures capable of preventing future attacks while strengthening intelligence gathering and rapid response capabilities.
Security experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of improved intelligence sharing, community policing and closer cooperation between residents and security agencies in tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes. They argue that sustained collaboration and timely information can significantly enhance efforts to prevent attacks and dismantle criminal networks.
The abduction in Enugu has renewed public concern over security in places of worship and other public spaces, with many stakeholders calling for increased surveillance and stronger protection for vulnerable communities. Religious leaders have also appealed for unity and cooperation while urging security agencies to intensify operations against criminal groups.
Despite expressing concern over the current security situation, Obi maintained that Nigeria can overcome its challenges through effective leadership, stronger institutions and collective commitment to national unity.
