House of Reps to hold Constitutional Review Hearing in Calabar

The House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has announced a zonal public hearing for stakeholders in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers States.

According to a press statement issued by the House of Reps Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution, Rt. Hon. Kingsley Chinda, the session is scheduled to hold at Transcorp Hotel (formerly Metropolitan Hotel) in Calabar on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.

The committee will receive public input on key constitutional amendment proposals.

Major areas of discussion include electoral reforms, judicial reforms, devolution of powers, local government autonomy, security restructuring, and fiscal federalism.

Other topics on the agenda are citizenship and indigeneship rights, traditional institutions, strengthening governance institutions, and potential state creation.

The hearing is part of a nationwide effort to gather grassroots opinions before finalizing amendments to Nigeria’s constitution.

Stakeholders, including civil society groups, legal experts, and government representatives, are expected to attend.

The committee emphasized the importance of broad participation to ensure an inclusive review process.
