Former President Olusegun Obasanjo urged Nigerians to embrace selflessness and service during the Rotary Club District 9111 convention in Abeokuta.
Represented by his wife, Bola Obasanjo, he emphasized making life better for others through daily acts of kindness.
Speaking at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, he encouraged reflection on personal contributions to society. “Ask yourself what you’re doing for others, just as Rotary does,” he said, stressing love and mutual support as keys to a better world.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by Deputy Noimot Salako-Oyedele, commended Rotary’s humanitarian work. He highlighted projects like the Rotary Prostate Cancer Center and Eye Center, which have transformed healthcare access in the state.
Abiodun called for renewed commitment to community empowerment, describing Rotary’s values as essential for societal healing. He urged Rotarians to engage communities directly, ensuring projects meet real needs while fostering harmony.
The event honored outgoing District Governor Dr. Oluwole Kukoyi and his wife for their dedicated service. Governor Abiodun charged incoming DG Henry Akinyele to build on this legacy, emphasizing sustainable impact and youth involvement.
Rotary International representative Eric Kimani reinforced the importance of global peace and polio eradication. He encouraged innovation and membership growth, urging Rotarians to remain financially committed to their causes.
Outgoing DG Kukoyi thanked members for their support and urged continued community impact. Traditional rulers, including the Olota of Otta, praised his contributions, noting Rotary’s role in uplifting society.
The convention also celebrated Bukola Bakare as the first female DG nominee from Ikeja GRA. Described as a dedicated humanist, she pledged to advance Rotary’s mission of service and empowerment.
