U.S. Approves $346m Arms Sale to Nigeria

The United States government has approved a potential $346 million sale of ammunition, precision bombs, and precision rockets to Nigeria, signaling a significant enhancement of the country’s defence capabilities.

The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) confirmed the approval in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the package aims to strengthen Nigeria’s ability to respond to security threats in the region.

Nigeria requested 1,002 MK-82 general-purpose 500 lb bombs, 1,002 MXU-650 Air Foil Groups (AFGs), 5,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II high-explosive warheads, and MK66-4 rocket motors.

The package also includes non-major defence equipment such as FMU-139 joint programmable fuzes, bomb components, impulse cartridges, high-explosive and practice rockets, integration support, and test equipment.

Additionally, the DSCA confirmed the inclusion of US government and contractor technical, engineering, and logistical support to ensure smooth integration.

The sale will involve major defence contractors, including Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles and Defence, and BAE Systems.

Lockheed Martin is renowned for producing advanced autonomous systems, aircraft, missiles, space launchers, and defence technologies, such as the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, C-130 Hercules transport aircraft, and Patriot missile systems.

RTX specializes in aircraft engines, guided missiles, air defence systems, radars, and cybersecurity solutions. BAE Systems, headquartered in London, builds military aircraft, missiles, naval ships, armoured vehicles, and defence electronics, ranking among the largest defence contractors globally.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a strategic partner in Sub-Saharan Africa,” the DSCA said.

“It will enhance Nigeria’s capability to confront current and future threats, particularly in operations against terrorist organisations and efforts to counter illicit trafficking in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea.”

The DSCA also clarified that the sale will not disrupt the regional military balance and that Nigeria can integrate the munitions into its armed forces without difficulty.

The stated description and dollar value represent the highest estimated quantity; the final cost may be lower, depending on Nigeria’s exact requirements, budget approval, and finalized sales agreements.

This move follows a previous US approval in 2022, which included military equipment valued at $997 million.

That earlier package comprised 12 attack helicopters, 2,000 advanced precision kill weapon system guidance sections, and night vision imaging systems.

The $346 million sale underscores the deepening security partnership between the United States and Nigeria while reflecting broader US efforts to support regional stability in West Africa.
