A Nigerian postgraduate student, Chiemka Okoronta, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by a UK court for raping a 17-year-old girl in Bradford.

The assault took place on March 25 after the pair met on a late-night bus in Morley, Leeds.

When the teenager’s phone switched off and she was left stranded, Okoronta offered her a ride home.

Instead, he took her to his apartment, tricked her into entering, locked her in the bathroom, and raped her.

The victim escaped and alerted police using a stranger’s phone.

Okoronta was found guilty on multiple rape charges.

He will serve an additional three years on extended licence and remain on the sex offenders register for life.

Deportation to Nigeria is expected upon completion of his sentence.

In her victim impact statement, the girl described severe trauma: “This incident has turned my life upside down. I have flashbacks and nightmares one minute I feel fine, the next it all comes back.”

Judge Sophie McKone branded Okoronta a “dangerous sexual predator” who deliberately isolated the victim to carry out the attack.

West Yorkshire Police praised the teenager’s courage in reporting the crime immediately.

Det Con Sue Sutcliffe said:

“I commend the victim for her bravery in coming forward right away to report this horrific offence. I urge anyone who has experienced sexual violence to contact us so we can take action.”
