Senator John Azuta Mbata, has been elected as the President General of apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

Mbata, a former lawmaker representing Rivers East at the National Assembly, was elected at the old government lodge Enugu, Enugu State capital on Friday.

Moreover, this comes after a retired Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro pulled out of the race on Thursday night.

Chief Okiro was accused of being an Imo state person and, as such, was not qualified to contest the position reserved for Rivers State indigenes.

The controversy raised by the identity crisis had triggered a lawyer, Aloy Ejiomfor, to approach the Enugu High Court, which restrained him from the race on Wednesday.

Okiro finally stepped down from the race in compliance with a Federal High Court order.
