Chimamanda Hosts Lupita N’yongo At A Private Reception In Lagos

Ahead of the adaptation of the award-winning book, “Americanah”, into a HBO TV series; Chimamanda Adichie hosted Kenyan-born Hollywood actress Lupita N’yongo in Nigeria.

The private reception took place in Lagos, on Saturday the 22nd of February, 2020.

It was exclusively graced by friends and family members of Chimamanda, public figures and members of the Nigerian creative community who were introduced to the actress by the globally acclaimed writer.

While speaking at the event, Lupita expressed her excitement the book, ‘Americanah’:

“I was awestruck by her ability to capture such exquisite character in a way that made me laugh but also made me feel seen.”

In an earlier interview with British media house, Another Magazine, Nyong’o revealed:

“I pre-ordered that book and I could not put it down.

“To see an African woman whose identity was in a flux in the way that Ifemelu’s is in the book just spoke so deeply to me. I could not stop thinking about it so I immediately contacted Chimamanda”.

In response, Chimamanda said:

“When Lupita wrote to me, I was very moved. She was genuine and true; it was clear my novel mattered deeply to her.

“Of course a screen adaptation is never going to be exactly like a novel but I think it’s important that whoever adapts a novel should care about it in a very personal way.

“Americanah is my ‘baby’ and I’m happy leaving my ‘baby’ in Lupita’s care”.
