Liverpool outstanding record comes to sudden end after Leicester City defeat
Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Leicester City on Tuesday evening brought to a sudden end an outstanding five-year Premier League run.
Ademola Lookman’s second-half strike confined Jurgen Klopp’s side to a surprise setback at the King Power Stadium, leaving the Reds six points adrift of Manchester City in the league standings.
Not since April had Liverpool failed to score in competitive match. The team now face a battle on their hands to catch Pep Guardiola’s men.
Losing to Leicester also represented a Premier League defeat in the month of December for the first time since 2016, bringing to an end a remarkable 35-game run.
The last league match Liverpool lost in the final month of the year was a 4-3 defeat at Bournemouth during the 2016/17 season, a game that Cherries came from 3-1 down to win in spectacular fashion late on.
Liverpool bounced back from this setback on the south coast with four wins from five in their remaining December fixtures, including triumphs over Everton and Manchester City.
And no side had been able to get the better of the Reds in the league during this crucial period, until Leicester’s triumph tonight.
