Governor’s Top Priority Should Be Deltans, Not Aso Rock – Gbandi

ASABA, DELTA STATE — Former Delta North Senatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Kenneth Chibuogwu Gbandi, has criticized remarks attributed to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori regarding political alignment, insisting that the governor’s foremost responsibility should be the welfare of Deltans rather than national political considerations.

Speaking in a statement following an interview reportedly granted by the governor on Arise News, Gbandi expressed concern over comments suggesting that the governor’s top priority was to “deliver Delta State politically.” According to him, such a position risks shifting attention away from the pressing needs of citizens and the constitutional responsibilities of government.

Gbandi argued that the primary duty of any elected governor is to ensure the security, welfare, and economic wellbeing of the people, regardless of the political party controlling the federal government. He maintained that governance should be measured by improvements in the lives of citizens rather than by electoral calculations or political alliances.

The ADC chieftain noted that Delta State is currently facing a range of challenges that require urgent attention, including insecurity, unemployment, economic hardship, infrastructure deficits, and concerns about public service delivery. He stressed that these issues should take precedence over efforts aimed at strengthening political influence at the national level.

According to him, Delta State should not be viewed merely as a political asset in broader national calculations but as a community whose development must remain the central focus of those entrusted with leadership. He added that citizens expect practical solutions to everyday challenges rather than early political maneuvering ahead of future elections.

Gbandi emphasized the need for improved security across rural communities, particularly for farmers who require safe access to their farmlands. He argued that agricultural productivity and food security depend heavily on peace and stability in local communities.

He also called for greater investment in youth development, job creation, and support for small and medium-scale enterprises. According to him, economic empowerment remains critical at a time when many residents are grappling with inflationary pressures and declining purchasing power.

The former senatorial candidate further urged the state government to prioritize improvements in healthcare, education, road infrastructure, and public accountability. He said transparency in governance is essential for rebuilding trust between government institutions and the people they serve.

Highlighting the role of opposition parties in a democratic system, Gbandi stated that constructive criticism and policy alternatives are necessary for strengthening governance and ensuring accountability. He argued that political leaders should be continually reminded that public office exists to serve citizens rather than partisan interests.

He therefore called on residents of Delta State to focus public discourse on governance outcomes rather than political alignments. According to him, citizens should demand accountability from elected officials and insist that issues affecting security, economic development, and social welfare remain at the forefront of government priorities.

Gbandi concluded that Delta State possesses significant economic and human potential, but warned that meaningful progress can only be achieved when leaders place the interests of the people above political calculations. He urged policymakers to ensure that governance remains centered on improving the lives of Deltans and delivering sustainable development across the state.
