Nasboi Urges Nigerians to Stop Attacking Celebrities Over Silence on Politics

Nigerian skit maker and singer Nasboi has called on Nigerians to ease the pressure on celebrities who choose to remain silent on political issues, urging the public to show more understanding toward public figures.

The entertainer made this appeal in a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, where he addressed the growing criticism often directed at celebrities for not speaking out on national matters.

According to Nasboi, many people fail to consider the risks and consequences that come with taking a public stance, especially in a politically charged environment. He pointed to the experience of fellow comedian and activist, Mr Macaroni, as a clear example of what outspoken celebrities can face.

Nasboi recalled how Mr Macaroni, who has consistently used his platform to advocate for the masses, was subjected to harassment and maltreatment after speaking up, only to later face mockery and insults from the same public he defended.

“People wey get sense, make we reason this matter,” he wrote. “Una dey always drag celebrities for not speaking up, but make I remind una of Mr Macaroni. See how dem maltreat am just because he spoke up for everybody. Yet na still people mock am and insult am. You think say other celebrities no dey see all those things?”

He further stressed that courage is not the same for everyone, noting that not all public figures are mentally or emotionally prepared to endure the backlash that often follows political expression.

“No be everybody get mind to talk. You have to accept that,” he added.

Nasboi also highlighted that just like many ordinary Nigerians are not actively interested in politics, some celebrities equally prefer to stay away from political discourse entirely. He emphasised that being in the public eye does not strip individuals of their fears, emotions, or personal choices.

“And make we no forget, just like some of una no dey interested in politics, na so some celebrities no like to involve politically. Celebrities are humans like you,” he concluded.

His statement has since sparked conversations online, with opinions divided between those who agree that celebrities should not be pressured into activism and others who believe public figures have a responsibility to use their platforms for societal good.

The discussion continues to reflect a broader debate about the role of celebrities in politics, freedom of expression, and the expectations placed on influential figures in times of national concern.
