Trump Mulls Earlier Tariff Deadline on Moscow as Ukraine Ceasefire Stalls

U.S. President Donald Trump is considering cutting short a 50-day ultimatum given to Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine.

Speaking on Monday, July 28, 2025, in Turnberry, Scotland, Trump expressed anger over fresh Russian strikes on civilians.

“I’m very disappointed in President Putin,” Trump told reporters. “We gave him 50 days, but I might shorten that. I think I already know his answer.”

Earlier in July, Trump had warned that if Putin didn’t end the Ukraine invasion by early September, the U.S. would impose up to 100 percent tariffs.

These sanctions would target Russia and any country continuing trade with Moscow.

Trump stressed that the impact would be “devastating.” He insisted the plan was meant to force Russia to pull out of Ukraine quickly.

According to Trump, he believed progress had been made in earlier negotiations. However, recent events shattered that hope.

“We thought it was close to being settled,” Trump said. “But then Putin starts firing rockets again. This time, they hit a city like Kyiv and killed a lot of people a nursing home or whatever. It’s horrible.”

Trump did not give an exact new date but said the deadline may now come sooner than September. He hinted that a shorter timeframe would pressure Putin further.

So far, the Kremlin has not responded to Trump’s revised warning. Meanwhile, the conflict in Ukraine continues with no sign of a ceasefire.

While Trump prepares for a possible second term, he is also reshaping U.S. foreign policy on the campaign trail. His tough stance on Russia is expected to influence global markets if the tariffs proceed.

Analysts say Trump’s comments signal a shift toward unilateral pressure rather than diplomatic negotiation.

The next few weeks could determine whether Putin responds or whether the U.S. escalates its economic assault.
