Ghislaine Maxwell, the former associate of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, has expressed willingness to testify before the United States Congress, under strict conditions, including full immunity from prosecution.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that this proposal follows a subpoena issued by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, who recently requested Maxwell’s appearance before the committee in the coming month.
Initially, Maxwell’s legal representatives indicated their client would invoke her Fifth Amendment right to remain silent.
However, a new letter sent to the House committee signals a change of course, provided that her legal team’s stringent conditions are accepted.
Maxwell’s attorneys emphasized that their client is currently appealing her criminal conviction before the U.S. Supreme Court.
They warned that any congressional testimony at this stage could jeopardize her legal strategy, violate her constitutional rights, and potentially taint the impartiality of future jurors.
The letter also criticized statements by some lawmakers, accusing them of prejudging Maxwell’s credibility without hearing her side or considering relevant documentation.
Among the conditions set by Maxwell’s team are a formal grant of immunity from any further legal action, a testimony location outside her current federal prison, advance notice of all committee questions, and a delay in testimony until the Supreme Court delivers a decision on her appeal and any future habeas corpus petition.
The justices are not expected to resume hearings on such petitions until October, following their summer recess.
Despite these requests, the House Oversight Committee has shown little appetite for compromise.
A spokesperson for the committee made it clear that immunity for Maxwell is off the table.
Chairman Comer was even more direct, stating that most Republicans would not support offering protection to someone potentially involved in sex trafficking minors.
Maxwell’s lawyers made it known that if her conditions are not met, she will revert to her Fifth Amendment rights.
In a provocative conclusion, her legal team floated the possibility of clemency from former President Donald Trump.
They said such a pardon could make Maxwell willing to appear in Washington to “honestly” share her version of events and dispel “misconceptions” surrounding her case.
For now, the legal and political standoff continues as Congress weighs its next move in the high-profile Epstein-Maxwell saga.
